Dear Iowa soaring pilots, After many years of service to the local soaring community,
Alois Langasek decided that it was time to resign from his duties as the Iowa
SSA State Record Keeper. Our Iowa
Soaring Governor, Paul Kaufmann,
asked me to fill this position and I have accepted the post. I hope to process many soaring record applications!
There is no point in having a record keeper if no one is out trying to
set new records. If record setting
is of interest to you, then please read the rules and follow them!
I’d recommend that everyone purchase a copy of Jackie Payne’s Badge
& Record Book (available from the SSA).
If you think that records are only for the guys with the state of the art
ships, then you’re wrong. There
are different classes of records including sports (handicapped) and many Iowa
record categories have never even had a claim. I do have some of the latest software for GPS flight
recorder analysis, but I’m also familiar with barographs.
Cameras and barographs make things harder for your official observer and
record keeper, but they are an economical alternative.
Flight recorders are the future, there will come the day when photos and
barograms are no longer accepted by the FAI or SSA.
Until that day, I will gladly process records using either technology. State records require an initial written notification be made to the state record keeper within 10 days of the flight. All paperwork must be submitted within 45 days of the flight. My contact information follows; Email- reyeshawk@aol.com Home phone- 515 222-1267 Cell phone- 515 979-8963 Address- Michael Reyes 608 Valhigh Rd.
West Des Moines, IA 50265 If you submit a claim, please telephone me if:
you don’t receive a response to an email within 3 days or a response to
a letter within 2 weeks. I plan to have a current Iowa state record web page up some time this summer. Iowa Soaring Contests Over the years Al Langasek also took care of scoring for
the recipients of the 1-26 trophy and the Open Class trophy.
Some years we had good participation and other years had no participants.
I’m going to re-announce these contests and modify the rules to make
participation easier and allow weekend only pilots a fair chance. I’m also going to add a Sports class (handicapped) contest.
We don’t currently have a trophy for the Sports Class contest, but at
bare mininum, I’ll at least come up with a nice certificate. Scoring; 1) The best two (2) flights for each pilot, in each category will be scored. 2) All flights must originate from Iowa. 3) A flight may only be scored in one category. 4) Distance will be scored by the rules of the OLC. (www.onlinecontest.org) Sports class distance will incorporate the DAEC handicapps. 5) All entries must be received by December 1st or prior to the state soaring banquet if that is sooner Categories; 1) Altitude Gain (above release or low point) 3 points/100ft. 2) Duration (from launch to landing, max. 3280ft agl tow) 2 points/minute 3) Distance 1 point/kilometer Documentation; 1) Altitude – Barograph, flight recorder or GPS capable of outputting altitudes will be accepted. 2) Duration – Barograph, flight recorder, GPS, or photo copies of club flight sheet or log book page. 3) Distance – Photos/Barogram, flight recorder, or a gps log transferred into an IGC format. The easiest way for me to score flights would be if I
was emailed an IGC file. The flight
recorders along with Garmin and Magellan GPS’s can do this.
Photos/Barograms while acceptable may not be able to take full advantage
of the distance rules. If you have any questions please email me at reyeshawk@aol.com
